What is MASH & how common is it?
What is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)?
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) (formerly known as NASH), is inflammation of your liver caused by excess fat cells in it. Chronic inflammation causes progressive liver damage. Although MASH resembles hepatitis caused by alcohol use, it likely stems from other risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes or elevated cholesterol. MASH can progress to more severe conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
How common is MASH?
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is common. Researchers estimate that up to 25% of adults in the U.S. have MASLD, and 20% of those with MASLD progress to MASH, the more severe form of MALSD.1Footnote
